The Invention That Changed Lighting

In 1926, Poul Henningsen looked at the sharp glare of the modern bulb and saw a problem worth solving. His answer was simple but radical - not one shade, but three. Each layer worked in harmony: one to tame the brightness, one to spread it evenly, and one to protect the eye. Henningsen based his design on a spiral found in seashells and sunflowers, believing nature already knew how to diffuse light beautifully. Nearly a century later, his system still shapes how the world lights its homes. And from that glow came a legacy: Arne Jacobsen’s sculptural clarity, Verner Panton’s play, Vilhelm Lauritzen’s logic - all drawing from the same Nordic instinct to make light not just seen, but felt.
